Clara Schumann:
1819-1896, German
The German classical composer and pianist, Clara Schumann may already seem like a familiar name. This is due to the fact that she was Robert Schumann’s spouse; and unfortunately her identity was reduced to “Robert Schumann’s wife” for the majority of her life despite her immense musical ability. At 14, Clara Schumann gave the premiere of her own Piano Concerto. By the age of 18 Schumann was already renown as one of the leading virtuosos in Europe. Within her marriage with Robert Schumann, Clara provided the primary financial stability. Additionally, Clara Schumann led a rise in the standard and expectation for performances as she was one of the first composers to perform recitals and concertos from memory. Clara Schumann wrote a total of 66 pieces, including works for piano and orchestra, solo piano, and cadenzas for piano concertos previously written for Beethoven and Mozart. However, after Robert Schumann’s passing, Clara began writing and composing less. Clara’s bold and dynamic composition solidify her immense musical capabilities.
