Victor Alexis Puig

Victor Alexis Puig is an independent Cuban artist who creates expressionist paintings and sculptures in order to highlight and represent the struggles of the alienated citizens of this impoverished and oppressed country.

In his own words, I am a Cuban artist, I work on expressionism, highlighting the alienation that exists in my country, Cuba. My characters are ordinary Cubans who fight every day to survive and of course I am one of those survivors who tries to get the world to recognize me and break the barriers to which all of us who think differently are subjected”

Puig’s emotionally driven and striking pieces display the ever-growing sentiment of indignation within Cuban society due to the oppressive Cuban regime. The bright infusion of color and thick texture allow for the hidden and suppressed sentiments of these “rebels” to be immortalized.

When speaking in a general sense regarding the purpose and meaning behind his art, Yo se de donde vengo.

(Translation into English) : "“ I know where I come from. My art is the result of an exclusive moment in Cuba, where people have taken conscience that we can and must better our lives. My depiction of faces displays, something I call, contemporary expressionist alienation. We live in a world saturated by images that try to adapt sensationalist news into everyday life. Journalists speak of 20 casualties as if it was normal. We’re talking about lives, lives that couldn’t have a future. My work is about the obstinacy to change the world where life is regarded like this, and like this we’ll have a better world. Collective thought is the only opportunity that we have as humans to not become extinct dinosaurs, and art would be the test, the hope that we haven’t been nor want to be dinosaurs.”

Regarding the first piece “Yo Llegue Primero…”, Puig states, “It is a work of thick and spontaneous brushwork where the grotesque of the material plays with the message of the artist.”

Puig’s work gives a voice to the hope and frustrations of Cuban citizens. Through work, such as that of Victor Alexis Puig’s, artistry may unite alienated communities and serve to personify their collective thought— allowing hope of unity to provide a glimpse into an improved future.
