Alma Thomas: 1891-1978, American
Alma Thomas was an African American artist and teacher working in Washington D.C. Thomas’ work followed her enduring study of color theory and watercolor mediums. After retiring from a 38-year-long career teaching art, Thomas began to pursue an independent career in art in 1960. Thomas tried to represent the flow and rhythm of natural landscapes. Being an African American woman within her time caused Thomas to endure many oppressive barriers in her career. However, Thomas chose to not represent these societal issues within her work as she believed art was free of gender or race.
