Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun: 1755-1842, French

Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun faced immense challenges as she worked in the sector of the arts as a woman in 18-century France. Vigée Le Brun created painted portraits of aristocratic women with a natural aesthetic. Vigée Le Brun was admitted into the French Academy as one of the only four female members. Due to the rise of the French Revolution, Vigée Le Brun left Paris and travelled throughout Europe. Through these travels Vigée Le Brun acquired commissions in Naples, Florence, and Vienna. Vigée Le Brun’s work was part of the Rococo and Neoclassicism periods.
