Firei Baez:

1981, Dominican

The Dominican-born and New York-based artist, Firei Baez’s work displays diasporic histories through her abstract and vibrat work. Baez represents these histories and how they reflect on the future by providing visualisations of cartography surrounding abstract subjects. The latina artist’s work also includes imagery of tropical flora constructing abstract figure compositions. Baez cultivates a strong sense of female empowerment through her bold representations of the Afro-Caribbean female identity and experience. Additionally a notable aspect of Baez’s work is the use of Dominican folklore as inspiration for the subjects of her pieces. For example, Untitled, features Baez’s interpretation of a cunning figure of Dominican folklore, the ciguapa. The artist received an M.F.A from Hunter College, a B.F.A at the Cooper Union’s School of Art, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Additionally, Baez’s work has been displayed at several exhibitions— including her solo exhibition Bloodlines in the Perez Art Museum in Miami.
